The ceremonial three-kilometre avenue from Rashtrapati Bhavan (the President's house) to India Gate. Walk the length early, before the heat. India Gate at the east end is the arch to the Unknown Soldier.

A 40-hectare park with 15th- and 16th-century Mughal tombs scattered across lawns. The Bara Gumbad mosque and the Sheesh Gumbad are the two finest. Joggers at dawn, peacocks in the afternoon, couples on benches all day.

A Khan Market institution since 2000 for European-Indian fusion. Baked lasagna, penne arabiata, the legendary Mississippi mud pie. Card accepted. Expect a fifteen-minute wait at peak lunch.

Three streets of premium shops — Good Earth home goods, Anokhi block-printed textiles, Bahrisons Booksellers, Fabindia for clothes. Less frenetic than Chandni Chowk; this is where middle-class Delhi shops on a weekend.

India's principal museum on Janpath. The prehistoric and Indus Valley galleries are the reason to come; the jewellery and musical instruments rooms are the underrated ones. Two hours. Tickets at the gate.
